Fire destroys vacant house on Walnut Street

By Cody Neuenschwander

KOKOMO – Fire destroyed a vacant house at 935 East Walnut Street late Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.

The cause of the fire was dubbed “undetermined” on a Kokomo Fire Department fire report. An investigator was sent to the scene to determine the point of the fire’s origin and how it started.

It was a residence that, according to the report, had caught fire on two other occasions. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damage.

According to the report, emergency personnel were notified about the fire just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, and the house was already heavily involved in flame by the time they arrived on the scene minutes later.

Multiple firetrucks were on the scene, spraying water into the heavy flames. The last unit left at 1:08 a.m.

Houses on either side of the burning residence also experienced damage. One residence had damaged vinyl siding and broken windows, with damage estimated around $6,500. The other had around $4,000 in damage, mainly to its siding.

The “cause of ignition” on the fire report was listed as intentional. Attempts to contact KFD Chief Nick Glover for clarification on that point were not successful.
