Fire, police departments investigate cause of house fire

By Cody Neuenschwander

KOKOMO – The cause of a serious Saturday evening house fire is under investigation, according to a Kokomo Fire Department report.

The fire, in the 300 block of East Richmond Street, caused an estimated $80,000 in damage. No injuries were reported.

The fire department responded to the call at 6:49 p.m. Saturday, and arrived on the scene three minutes later.

According to reports, there were flames visible upon arrival, and a heavy blaze in the house’s front room. Firefighters confirmed at the scene no one was home at the time, discovering the owner had been gone for about two hours.

The fire spread to the attic, where it damaged a large portion of both the attic and the front room. The entire house sustained smoke damage.

After extinguishing the flame, the fire department cleared the scene a little after 9 p.m.

The report specified that one of the house’s windows was open, and Kokomo Fire Department Capt. Doug Stout said police were working in conjunction with the fire department on investigating the cause.
