Fire victim arrested after blaze

Kokomo woman held on two drug charges

Kokomo — Kokomo firefighters rescued a woman from a burning house Monday morning, using a ladder to help her exit a second-story window.

The victim didn’t stay without shelter for long. A short time later, Kokomo police arrested her on drug charges.

Neither police nor KFD Deputy Chief Brad Myers had information immediately available as to whether the fire was drug related.

But Brandi Bradley, 31, 400 block of East Vaile Avenue, was arrested on felony charges of marijuana possession and methamphetamine possession and taken to the Howard County jail, KPD Capt. Robert Salinas said.

Brad Myers said the department’s fire inspector, Glenda Myers, called for police shortly after beginning her investigation of the fire scene.

Firefighters were called out at 10:11 a.m. Monday and arrived at the scene to find Bradley calling for help from a window on the west side of the wood-framed house.

The crew used a ladder to get Bradley down, and then hauled a hose up an exterior stairway on the east side of the house to attack the fire.

Brad Myers said there was extensive damage in the upstairs apartment where Bradley lived, and smoke and water damage to the downstairs apartment.

The stairway on the east side of the house was the only entrance/exit for Bradley’s apartment, and she couldn’t reach it because of the fire, he added.

Bradley was being held at the jail Monday evening on $10,000 bond, 10 percent allowed. She was treated for a minor injury — a scrape — at the scene, according to Brad Myers.
