Construction of a new fire station on Dixon Road is being placed on a fast track by Kokomo officials, hoping to have it operating by the end of the year.

The Kokomo Board of Public Works & Safety on Wednesday set June 20 to accept bids on the construction of the station, which will provide fire protection to the southwest annexed area.

City controller Jim Brannon said construction will start in July and the plan is to have the station completed by Jan. 1.
Brannon said the estimated cost of the station to be located at 3506 Dixon Road is $1 million. He said the city has budgeted some funds for the station and has earmarked where the remaining funds will be obtained.

The city plans are for the closing of Station 4 at Webster Street and Lincoln Road.

Brannon said the new station will house one truck and will be smaller than the station opened on Center Road in 2011. He said there wouldn’t be a police presence at the Dixon Road facility.

Last year, the city opened the new $2.1 million Station 2 on Center Road to provide fire protection to the southeast annexed area.
