Officials identify children killed in Christmas Eve fire

Sisters Alexis Jones, 12, and Mercedes Jones,10, found dead inside residence

The two children killed in a house fire Christmas Eve morning have been identified as sisters Alexis Ann Jones, 12, and Mercedes Faith Jones, 10.

The children were identified after the Howard County Coronerís Office conducted an autopsy Tuesday at Community Howard Regional Health at the request of Coroner Steve Seele.

The cause and manner of death is pending further investigation and lab studies, according to a release from the Kokomo Police Department.

Alexis and Mercedes Jones were found dead inside their home at 908 N. Morrison St. after a fire ravaged the residence Sunday morning. Three other children, two adults and one firefighter also sustained injuries and were treated at St. Vincent hospital.

The Kokomo Police Department and the Kokomo Fire Department responded to the house at around 3:38 a.m. on a report of a residence fully engulfed in flames.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the two-story structure engulfed with flames shooting out of the windows and learned there were people trapped inside the residence.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined. The case is currently under investigation by the Kokomo Police Department, the Kokomo Fire Department and the Howard County Coronerís Office.
