Fire damages two houses through evening, early morning

By Cody Neuenschwander
KOKOMO – Two Kokomo homes were heavily damaged in two separate house fires Monday evening and early Tuesday morning.

No injuries were reported in either fire.

According to a Kokomo Fire Department report, fire personnel were dispatched to a house fire in the 2500 block of West Sycamore Street at 4:12 a.m.

By the time the fire was extinguished, an estimated $21,000 in damage was done to the structure and its contents.

The report says the house’s occupants were able to make it out after they were alerted by smoke alarms. The fire appeared to have started in a laundry room, behind a dryer machine, and spread to a portion of the attic.

A section of the ceiling in the laundry room was pulled down and the fire was extinguished. The home was insured, and the occupants confirmed they had a place to stay.

Fire personnel left the scene at 5:16 a.m.

Just over eight hours earlier, at 8:35 p.m. Monday, fire crews responded to a house fire in the 200 block of West State Street. The house’s occupant, the report states, wasn’t home at the time and it appeared the fire started in a bedroom. The cause is listed as undetermined.

The fire spread beyond the bedroom into a hallway and attic space. Reports indicate personnel were on scene combating the blaze until around 10:17 p.m.

Damages are estimated at around $29,000.
