Fire Station 6 to get new look
By Ken de la Bastide

The city of Kokomo is planning to give Fire Station 6 a facelift in 2014.

Included in the budget for the Kokomo Fire Department is an appropriation of $135,000 for improvements to the station, 1717 E. Boulevard, which was constructed in 1963 in the same era as Station 3.

The Fire Department budget includes $25,000 to remodel the restrooms at Station 1 and $40,000 for repairs and maintenance of the six current fire stations.

Fire Chief Pat O’Neill said the two stations were built identically in the 1960s. He said in the early 1990s, a new bay was added to Station 6 to house the aerial ladder truck.

“It has not been remodeled since it was built,” he said. “In 2012, we remodeled Station 3.”

O’Neill said Station 6 will undergo a similar remodeling effort with a new facade and heating and air conditioning systems and updated restrooms.

He said the final design has not been  determined and a local architect will be hired to work on the remodeling project.

There is also an appropriation for $40,000 for the purchase of two used staff vehicles next year.
